Hillary Pierce is an Austin, Texas based storyteller, documentary producer, and consultant. She is one of the producers behind Keith Maitland’s dual 2016 feature documentaries TOWER and A SONG FOR YOU: THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS STORY. TOWER broadcast nationally on PBS’ Independent Lens in February 2017 and was shortlisted for an Academy Award.
Hillary began her career working in the film and television industry of her native North Carolina, but soon found herself drawn to the documentary world. Intrigued by authentic characters and stories about home, diversity, music, and the great outdoors, she embarked upon a non-fiction focused path. After exploring stories in Texas and Central America, Hillary relocated to New York and completed a story and development internship at Maysles Films, soaking up the generous wisdom of Direct Cinema pioneer Albert Maysles.
She earned an MFA in Documentary Film at Wake Forest University where she co-produced and co-directed THE ONE WHO BUILDS, a documentary about refugee resettlement in the American South with Nick Gooler and Peter Carolla. The film won Best Short Documentary awards at both Kansas City Film Fest and Boston International Film Festival, is currently on a university screening tour, and being distributed in the educational market by Alexander Street. While at Wake Forest, she also assisted faculty member filmmaker Peter Gilbert (HOOP DREAMS) teaching multiple semesters of Visual Storytelling.
Having returned to Austin in 2013, Hillary has spent the last several years working on TOWER and A SONG FOR YOU: THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS STORY. She is currently writing and developing new projects while working on the impact campaign for TOWER, producing the Wild Film Tour, and consulting with filmmakers on story and fundraising.
